28th June
I headed down to the conference around 8:00am. A continental breakfast was provided for each day of the conference. Unfortunately it, and every other meal, was laden with carbs and I put on several kilos during the week.
At 10:00am Steve Jobs gave the opening keynote and introduced, what turned out to be, a reasonable subdued conference. He announced Tiger, OS X version 10.4. He announced some amazing 30 inch LCD monitors; and he announced that the transition from Mac OS 9 to OS X was complete. It was all good. Developers can settle down to a good year of development with no major changes anticipated. However the steady-as-you-go message, coupled with the failure to reach 3.0GHz in the Power PC meant that the usual excitement was somewhat subdued.
I enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances from previous conferences and I was really impressed by Quartz, XCode and some of the other technology I saw.
Attendees were allowed to check out the Java conference pavilion across the way. I did this during the week. The Java pavilion was much more impressive that the Apple one. I scored some T-Shirts and oohed and ahhed appropriately at a number of stands.
One of the neat things at the Apple conference were BMW sports cars and Mini Coopers. These cars had an attachment for an iPod in the glove compartment. They were being touted as the ultimate iPod accessory.
The highlight of the week was the Apple Bash at the Apple campus. It was loud and enthusiastic. The food was good and plentiful and the general atmosphere was merry.
Anyway, it was a great week and I came back enthusiastic about finally taking time to code that killer app and make my fortune.
